Mederrano Cologne Brief description

History comes alive – at Mederrano Cologne! Here you can experience Mediterranean cuisine in the historic vault of a patrician house dating back to 1266 – just 150 meters from the Rhine and Heumarkt.

Mederrano Cologne invites you to enjoy Mediterranean cuisine in a historic vaulted cellar like no other.

The old patrician house, in which Mederrano Cologne is located, has a centuries-long history: the House of Groenenberg already stood in 1266 – these walls have witnessed nearly 800 years of history.

The cellars in Mederrano Cologne served as wine storage and general storage until 1943 – because of the narrow street layout and the raised light courtyard, it remained pleasantly cool even in summer, which was ideal for storing wine. In 1750, the Italian merchant Antonio Francesco Cassinone had the old house demolished and replaced with a new building, which remained in family ownership until around 1850.

Around 1870, the wine shop Engels was located here, and before 1910 there was a restaurant with a separate wine shop. In 1939, the brothers Peter and Heinrich Bonrath took over the establishment and transferred the name of their wine house 'Denant' (Diamond) to this location.

In 1942, the artist Ewald Mataré was commissioned to redesign the Madonna of Protection on the exterior facade of what is now Mederrano Köln. Ewald Mataré and Josef Haubrich were part of the scene around the Weinhaus and had a lasting impact on the cultural landscape of Cologne – it is a piece of Cologne's cultural history you can experience firsthand.

Today, guests at Mederrano Köln enjoy Mediterranean cuisine in an ambiance connected to this rich history.

The central location, just 150 meters from the Rhine and Heumarkt, makes every visit a special experience – history and enjoyment in perfect combination.

Visit Mederrano Köln – where Mediterranean cuisine meets 800 years of history and every visit is unforgettable.
