Restaurant Brief description

The Restaurant "Mederrano" located in the old patrician house with an historical vault. Enjoy the Mediterranean atmosphere and the bound history. Right in the heart of Cologne, only 150m from Rhine and Heumarkt.

The restaurant "Mederrano"

Until 1943 this cellar served as a depot for wine for the house "Groenenberg", Vor Sankt Martin 1.
Because of the narrowness of the street and the superior Lichhof this place was always nice and cold, even in summer.
The "Haus Groenenberg" was already built in 1266.
In 1750 the Italian merchant Antonio Francesco Cassinone had the old house be pulled down and be replaced with a new one. It stayed in possession of the family until approximately 1850.

Around 1870 it served as premises for the wine store Engels.

Before 1910 the house functioned as a restaurant with separate wine store, owned by Martin Schönau. In 1939 the brothers Peter and Heinrich Bonrath took over the eatery and used the name of their former wine house "Denant" (=diamond). It had to give way to the planned west-east-thoroughfare in 1938.

Artists

In 1942 Ewald Mataré received the order to remodel the "Schutzmadonna" (protection Madonna) at the outer facade of the wine house Denant (now "Mederrano") in the Plectrudengasse.

Ewald Mataré and Josef Haubrich were part of the cultural scene around the wine house Denant and deeply influenced the cultivated landscape of Cologne.
