Bierhaus En d’r Salzgass is another fine thread in the colourful tapestry of Cologne alehouses and breweries. Spread on several levels it presents a spacious interior with many niches to withdraw from the crowd while still being part of it. Rustic dark wooden furniture is complemented by light polished tabletops. Päffgen-Kölsch is on tap any many other beverages are offered as well – with and without alcohol. The alehouse is in a historical location; already in the Middle Ages breweries and taverns were located there.
For centuries already the way to the riverside from the Heumarkt (hay market) led through the Salzgasse (salt-alley). In the Middle Ages this was where fish was salted to be sold at the fish-market nearby. Just around the corner is the alley called Lintgasse which was the place for weaving fish-baskets and rounding another corner you will find Unter Käster, the place where Cologne’s famous salted herrings were prepared for export. Salt played a pivotal role on this alley! It is well known that salt has a tendency to get people thirsty… No wonder that already in the old times a brewery was situated in that very place.
